York Regional Police (YRP) accepted the prestigious Leadership in the Prevention of Vehicle Crimes Award presented by the International Association of Chiefs of Police at its annual conference held in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 21, 2024. Sponsored by General Motors and OnStar, this award honours exceptional achievement in vehicle theft prevention and highlights the link between vehicular crime and subsequent violent offences. YRP significantly reduced auto thefts within the Region, achieving a 31 percent decrease year-over-year from 2023 to 2024. This success is primarily due to the launch of Autoguard 2.0, which employs a comprehensive approach that includes enforcement, active community engagement and proven crime prevention strategies.

YRP is working consistently to combat auto theft in the Region through ongoing efforts, including initiatives like Auto Guard 2.0 and a range of comprehensive, multi-faceted strategies.

Three York Regional Police officers were honoured by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) York Region for their ongoing efforts in fighting impaired driving. Two officers received the Sarah Riddell Officer of the Year Award at the MADD York Region annual awards ceremony on October 23, 2024. The award is named after the former YRP Road Safety Bureau Staff Sergeant Sarah Riddell – now a Superintendent.

This award recognizes outstanding efforts to reduce impaired driving in York Region and exceptional enforcement of impaired operation by means of arrests, charges, convictions, breath tests and drug recognition evaluation. The third officer was the recipient of the MADD Special Recognition Award for going above and beyond to stop impaired driving.

MADD York Region’s mission is to stop impaired driving and support the victims of this violent crime.
